Septic Tank Services is based in Scotland and provides professional septic tank and drainage solutions across the country, as well as the north of England. Working across such a wide area means we’ve encountered hugely varied ground conditions, from hard granite and rocky terrain to sandy coastal soil and mossy woodland.

This hands-on experience gives us a unique understanding of what works best when it comes to leach field design, drainage field placement and septic tank systems. Over the years, we’ve seen many common leach field problems and, more importantly, how to fix them efficiently and properly.

What is a leach field used for?

A leach field (also known as a drainage field or soakaway field) is a critical part of a septic tank system. Its role is to safely disperse treated wastewater into the ground.

Once solid waste has settled in the septic tank and beneficial bacteria have broken it down, the remaining wastewater effluent flows into the leach field. From there, it slowly filters through the soil, where it is naturally treated before reaching the groundwater in a clean and safe state.

This process relies on an underground network of perforated drainage pipes that evenly distribute wastewater across a designated area of land. However, a range of issues can interfere with this process, from blockages and broken pipes to unsuitable soil conditions or ground compaction.

Common leach field problems

Waterlogging and poor drainage

Scotland’s climate presents unique challenges for leach field systems, particularly in areas with clay-heavy soil. During periods of heavy rainfall, clay soil can quickly become waterlogged, preventing wastewater from draining properly.

Instead of filtering downwards, water can remain on the surface, leading to pooling, soggy ground and system failure. Similar problems can occur where the soil has become compacted, often due to vehicle traffic or heavy equipment.

For this reason, we always recommend that drainage fields and leach fields are kept clear and not used for parking, storage or construction.

Tree roots & blockages

Tree roots are a common cause of leach field blockages. Roots can travel surprisingly long distances underground in search of moisture, eventually infiltrating or damaging drainage pipes.

When pipes become constricted or broken, wastewater cannot flow freely through the system. This can cause slow drainage, gurgling sounds in household plumbing, or even water backing up into sinks and toilets.

Blockages can also result from poor septic tank maintenance. While wastewater flows into the leach field, regular septic tank emptying removes solid waste. If you neglect this, solids escape into the drainage field, clog pipes and create strong sewage odours.

Poor leach field design or placement

In some cases, leach field problems stem from poor design or incorrect installation. DIY installations or work carried out without proper knowledge of soil conditions, regulations or drainage requirements can result in systems that are effectively set up to fail.

Although a poorly placed leach field may appear to work initially, problems such as waterlogging, blockages and system overload are likely to develop over time.

How do you know when leach fields need fixed or replaced?

As with most things, early detection is key to keeping costs down. Warning signs to look out for include:

Slow drainage in your home, or the drains making odd gurgling noises

Water backing up into your home, from the sink or toilet

A bad sewage smell outside

Leach fields with unexpected lush greenery (which means the minerals are being absorbed at the surface, rather than draining away).

Water pooling in your leach field and not draining quickly (or at all).

Here is some more information on what to look out for with a faulty leach field system.

See a problem? Get in touch

Blocked drains and septic tank blockages are common problems across Scotland and the North of England, often caused by grease buildup, debris, tree roots or heavy rainfall affecting drainage systems. If left untreated, blocked drains can lead to wastewater backing up into homes, unpleasant odours, structural damage, and serious health risks. Septic Tank Services Ltd provides professional drain unblocking, septic tank maintenance, and high-pressure jetting (hydro jetting) to quickly clear blockages and restore proper drainage. Our team uses powerful jetting equipment to remove grease, debris, and root intrusions from pipes, helping homeowners keep their septic systems and drainage networks flowing safely and efficiently.

When everything we put down our toilets and drains flows away properly, it’s easy to forget about what’s happening underground. But in reality, blocked drains and septic tank blockages are common problems, especially in Scotland and the north of England where wind, leaves and wet weather can quickly cause drainage issues.

From the slow buildup of grease and fat to debris entering outside drains, there are many reasons why a septic tank system can become blocked. We’ve covered some of the causes of septic tank blockages before, but what happens if the problem is ignored?

Blocked drains cause big problems

A blocked drain rarely clears itself. In fact, the longer a drainage problem is left untreated, the worse it usually becomes.

A fully blocked drain can cause wastewater to back up into your home, leading to overflowing sinks and toilets. This can result in significant property damage, unpleasant odours, and contamination that can linger for weeks.

In some cases, you may not even see the wastewater straight away. It can seep into walls, floors and foundations, causing damp problems, rotting wood, cracks and mould growth, all of which are expensive to repair.

But it can get even worse.

Blocked drains and septic tank overflows aren’t just inconvenient, they can be dangerous to our health. Wastewater contains harmful bacteria and pathogens that pose serious health hazards. Exposure to contaminated water can lead to illnesses such as gastroenteritis, hepatitis A and even typhoid.

If you suspect a drainage problem or septic tank blockage, it’s important to act quickly. Call us at Septic Tank Services as soon as you notice slow drains, bad smells or unusual water levels.

Early fixes save money

Leaving a blocked drain for any length of time often leads to higher repair costs. What might start as a simple and affordable drain unblocking service can quickly escalate into a major insurance claim involving damaged flooring or structural repairs.

Using our high-pressure jet washing equipment, we can resolve most septic tank blockages quickly and efficiently. From grease and fat buildup to tree roots growing into pipes, our equipment is powerful enough to clear almost any obstruction.

If a drain has collapsed or cracked, we can also carry out drain repairs and pipe replacement where necessary.

How power jetting blocked drains works

High-pressure jetting, also known as power jetting or hydro jetting, is one of the most effective methods for clearing blocked drains and septic tank pipework.

This process uses powerful jets of water to break down grease, fat and debris as well as remove roots or stubborn blockages. We’ll clean the full internal diameter of the pipe which should go some way to preventing recurring drainage issues.

Unlike traditional drain rods, power jetting cleans the entire drainage system, not just the immediate blockage. It’s fast, effective, environmentally friendly, and uses no harsh chemicals.

Our professional power jetting service leaves your drains clear, clean and flowing freely. Contact us today to book an appointment. Find out more about our high power jet cleaning service here.

Don’t wait—clean your drains ASAP

If you’re experiencing slow drains, bad smells or suspect a septic tank blockage, don’t wait for the problem to get worse. Early intervention can prevent costly repairs, health risks and major disruption.

Get in touch with our friendly team at Septic Tank Services today to arrange professional drain unblocking, septic tank services or power jetting across Scotland and the north of England.

Blocked septic tank drains are one of the most common drainage problems for homes across Scotland and the north of England, often caused by grease buildup, non-flushable items, excess solids, soap residue, collapsed pipes, or overloaded drainage fields. When septic tank pipes become blocked, wastewater may drain slowly, produce unpleasant odours, or even back up into the home. Septic Tank Services Ltd provides professional septic tank drain unblocking, pipe inspections, and high-pressure jetting services to quickly identify and remove blockages. Using camera diagnostics and powerful water jetting equipment, our team helps homeowners restore proper drainage and prevent future septic tank pipe problems.

One of the most common problems we see when it comes to septic tank systems is blocked drains. Over and above all else, blocked septic tank drains are not only one of the most troublesome of issues, they are also one the the easiest to avoid. Fortunately, they are also straightforward to solve thanks to our high-pressure water jet which can blast through any buildup in next to no time.

Is your septic tank is blocked? We can help customers in Scotland and the north of England to clean out the pipes and get back to normal. But what causes septic tank pipes to become clogged in the first place? Read on to discover causes, and some solutions to try and fix them yourself.

Main causes of blocked septic tank pipes

Prevention is better than cure, so here are some of the way your pipes can become blocked.

Flushing things which shouldn’t be flushed. As a rule, only flush toilet paper down your toilet. And ideally, make it septic tank-friendly toilet paper. Anything else is a no-no. This includes ‘flushable’ wipes which really should not be flushed at all. Instead, place anything you don’t flush in the bin.

Grease & fat. When in the kitchen, it can be easy to think flushing plate grease down the sink is okay, especially when followed by copious amounts of washing-up liquid. Unfortunately, this is a terrible idea and the fat and grease will eventually combine into a large plug, blocking your pipes completely. Instead, take the grease and fat and either put it in your food waste bin, or in the general waste. Bonus points if you collect the fat waste and make a bird feeder ball from it!

Too much sold waste. Solids can build up in septic tanks which haven’t been pumped regularly. As a result, the pipes will clog. The solution to this is to have your tank emptied regularly. Speak to us on how we can help keep your septic tank in a healthy condition.

Collapsed pipes. Old pipes can collapse, making the flow of water through them impossible. Using our camera equipment, we can find and diagnose any problems like this quickly, and know exactly where to dig in order to fix them.

Soap buildup. Believe it or not, the soap you use at home can cause problems in your tank. Over time, the soap residue can build up in your pipes, eventually leading to blockages. Make sure you use soap suitable for septic tank systems.

Clogged drainage field. If your drainage or runoff field is overloaded or clogged, wastewater can back up into the septic system. This often leads to blocked pipes. This might happen if the soil becomes compacted, so avoid using it and definitely don’t park your car on it. We can come and analyse your drainage field and get it back into working order.

Fix your own blocked septic tank drains

Before incurring an expense, you might want to try to solve the blockage problem yourself. That’s not always possible – for example if there is a large blockage deep within the pipe system – but here are a couple of things to try.

Snake drain

Ideally you would hope to avoid needing to flush loads of chemicals into your pipes in order to dissolve a blockage. That’s because this will cause havoc with the good bacteria in your septic tank. So a good place to start is to buy a drain snake. These are relatively inexpensive and available from the likes of Amazon and can reach far into your drainage system and give whatever is blocking it a good push. This might work for smaller or lighter blockages,

Enzyme cleaners

Rather than using harsh chemicals, enzyme cleaners may be able to clear your blockage without destroying your good bacteria. Manufacturers such as envii offer a range of septic tank-friendly products. Whatever you do, do not pour bleach down your drains. This will cause more harm than good in the long run.

Unblocking your drains

If you can’t solve the blockage yourself, it’s time to call in the experts – that’s us! Once the Septic Tank Services team have discovered the cause of your blockage, we can get to work fixing it. This might mean some jet powered water blasting through a blockage, or some maintenance work to fix broken or damaged pipes. Get in touch today and we will help you fix your blocked septic tank drains, and be able to offer advice on how to avoid it happening again.

Even the best septic tanks can break. This can be through no fault of the owner. Wear and tear can take its toll, as well as unexpected problems like ground movement or tree roots breaking pipes. It’s not always immediately obvious that there is a problem, but telling signs start to appear and it’s worth knowing what they are so you can look out for them. If you think you need some septic tank repair, and are in Scotland or the north of England, then we can help. Just get in touch and we can chat through your needs before sending our team out to help. In the meantime, here are some points to consider.

Do you need a septic tank repair?

Some of the more common symptoms which indicate a problem with your septic tank include:

Your toilets and drains are slow

Have you noticed that water is draining away more slowly than usual from your sinks or toilets? This indicates that there might be a blockage in a pipe somewhere, or even that your septic tank is full. If your drains are also gurgling, this is a sign that air is trapped somewhere and not letting your wastewater flow away freely. It could indicate a hole in a pipe. The sooner this is checked out, the better.

Strong smells

If you are noticing troubling odours around your drains or septic tank, that is a sign that something is wrong. It could be blocked, full or even leaking into the ground.

Water is pooling or not draining well outside

If you find your soakaway area is starting to become marshy, then water is not draining from it. This may be because the ground has shifted, your pipes have become blocked or the soil is too compacted.

It may come as a surprise to you that particularly lush vegetation in isolated areas of your property may indicate a problem! This may be where waste is leaking from a pipe, and the water, whilst helpful to the plant life, may also be carrying some nasty pollutants which should not be released into the environment. This needs to be checked out urgently.

Take care of your tank

The tanks we install can last up to 30 or even 40 years. However it is important to take care of them. This means regular maintenance, and keeping an eye out for little problems before they become big problems.

Remember to follow the basic rules, which is don’t put anything down your drains that isn’t designed for septic tanks, and definitely no harsh chemicals like bleach.

However if you are starting to have concerns, then it’s time to call us. We can investigate the health of your plumbing and tank.

Choosing the right septic tank toilet paper is important for keeping your septic system working properly. Some toilet papers such as Cheeky Panda Bamboo toilet paper break down quickly and are safe for septic tanks. However thicker or chemically treated products can cause blockages and disrupt the beneficial bacteria that break down waste. For homeowners across Scotland and the North of England, using biodegradable, septic-safe, single-ply toilet paper helps prevent pipe blockages, slow drainage, and septic tank problems. Septic Tank Services Ltd provides septic tank inspections, maintenance, and emptying services to help households keep their septic systems running safely and efficiently.

With so many rules to follow about what you can and can’t put down your toilet and drains, you might think that toilet paper is toilet paper and it doesn’t really matter what sort you use. Whatever you bum prefers, right? Wrong! Choosing the right septic tank toilet paper is more important than you might think. Septic systems are designed to handle waste efficiently. However, the type of toilet paper you use can significantly impact how well your system functions.

Some toilet papers break down easily and are safe for septic tanks. Others can cause blockages or have chemicals harmful to a tank’s bacteria. As septic tank experts covering Scotland and the north of England, we’ve seen out fair share of toilet paper disasters. Here’s a rundown of the types of paper to go for and avoid.

And remember, if you are having problems with your septic tank, book it in for an assessment with us before the issues get even worse!

Best types of toilet paper for septic tanks

The best type of toilet paper for septic tanks is one that is biodegradable and dissolves quickly in water. Biodegradable toilet paper is specifically designed to break down rapidly once it enters the septic system, reducing the risk of clogs and build-up in your tank. Biodegradable toilet paper is often made from recycled materials, making it an environmentally friendly choice as well.

Another key factor is the ply of the toilet paper. Sure, we all love a nice thick double or triple ply. But this can cause problems with the way septic tanks work. Single-ply toilet paper tends to dissolve more easily than thicker, multi-ply options, making it a safer choice for septic systems. So unfortunately you will have to decide on whether to give your bottom an extra-special treat, or if you want to avoid septic tank issues down the line.

Some companies offer toilet paper specifically designed for septic tanks, for example Papernet and Novatissue.

Other options include Unbleached Bamboo Toilet Paper, which breaks down at a steady rate, and The Cheeky Panda Bamboo Toilet Tissue which is biodegradable, free from fragrances and suitable for vegans.

Worst types of toilet paper for septic tanks

The worst types of toilet paper for septic tanks are those that are thick and heavily quilted. These types of toilet paper don’t break down easily and can cause serious problems in a septic system. Any that contain added lotions or perfumes should be avoided at all costs. These types of rolls often contain chemicals that can disrupt the natural bacterial balance in your septic tank, which is essential for breaking down waste. When these products accumulate, they can lead to blockages, slow drainage, and even septic system failure. If you find you have a blockage, perhaps because you didn’t realise the importance of choosing the right paper, then we can help.

Paper over the cracks

So if you have a septic tank, it’s best to choose toilet paper that is single-ply, biodegradable, and free of added chemicals. Remembering these three rules can ensure a longer-lasting septic system and keep everything running smoothly. By selecting the right type of septic tank toilet paper, you can help ensure that your septic system remains healthy for many years.

Thinking about selling your house which has a septic tank? Selling a house with a septic tank in the UK requires careful planning and forward thinking. Septic tanks are common in rural properties across Scotland and the north of England. But they come with specific legal, environmental, and buyer-focused considerations when selling your home. Understanding the regulations around selling a property with a septic tank whilst making sure everything is compliant can help ensure a smoother, quicker house sale.

When selling a property with a septic tank, many homeowners choose to arrange a professional septic tank inspection before putting their house on the market. Septic Tank Services are frequently asked to inspect septic tanks in Scotland and northern England prior to sale. This allows any issues to be identified early and resolved before buyers become involved.

Septic tank regulations

Firstly, by law your septic tank needs to be registered if it is in Scotland. You can check if it is or not on this SEPA page. If it isn’t, then you need to ensure it follows all regulations before registering it. If you are unsure, then we are happy to do a full assessment on the septic tank and drainage field for you. Should your tank be registered, it is good practice to have registration confirmation available to view for potential buyers. There is usually no need to register your septic tank in England so long as it meets ‘general binding rules‘.

When selling a home with a registered septic tank, it’s good practice to have proof of registration available for potential buyers. This reassures buyers that the system is legally compliant and properly maintained.

Transparency is key when selling a property with a septic system. Buyers will expect clear information on the septic tank’s condition, location, age, and maintenance history. Providing inspection reports, servicing records, and repair details helps build trust and confidence, making your home more attractive to buyers.

Septic tank inspections

Arranging a septic tank inspection before selling your house is highly recommended. A pre-sale septic tank inspection provides an up-to-date, independent assessment of the condition of the tank, pipes, and drainage field.

If the inspection confirms your septic tank is in good working order, you can proceed with confidence. If issues are identified, you have options. You can carry out repairs before listing the property. Alternatively you can be transparent with buyers and reflect the condition in the asking price. In some cases, sellers prefer to adjust the price rather than invest time and money into repairs.

What you want to avoid when selling a house with a septic tank is a last-minute problem discovered during a buyer’s own survey, which can lead to delays, renegotiation or even a collapsed sale.

Septic tanks in tip-top shape

Selling a house with a septic tank in Scotland and England should be a straightforward process. By ensuring compliance with regulations, being transparent with potential buyers and conducting a thorough inspection, you can rest easy knowing you have done everything you can. Get in touch with us today if you are planning on selling a house with a septic tank in the UK, and we will be happy to organise an assessment.

What to Do If You Have a Smelly Septic Tank

A smelly septic tank is not just an annoyance; it can be a symptom of a much larger problem with your drainage. Often, these problems need to be addressed quickly before they escalate into a serious issues that could damage your home. That’s why if you notice an unpleasant odour coming from your septic tank or drainage field, it’s important to take quick action. Here are some of the potential causes of septic tank odours, and what you can do to address the issue.

Why does my septic tank smell?

Several factors can cause a smelly septic tank. Some common causes include:

Full septic tank: One of the most common reasons for septic smells is a tank that is overdue for emptying. When the tank is full, waste can build up and cause foul smells. We strongly recommend regular emptying of septic tanks before they reach this stage. We offer septic tank emptying services throughout Scotland and the north east of England.

Drainage field issues: Problems with the drain or runoff field, such as clogs or saturation, can prevent proper drainage and lead to unpleasant smells. Get in touch and we can assess the saturation of the soil and make some recommendations to improve matters.

Improper maintenance: Lack of regular maintenance, such as infrequent emptying or inspections can cause small problems to build. This can result in larger issues like leaky pipes of a cracked tank. Speak to us about regular maintenance on your septic tank to avoid this.

Use of harsh chemicals: Harsh chemicals can kill the beneficial bacteria in your septic tank that help break down waste, leading to a buildup of solids and unpleasant smells. There are some things you simply should not flush into your septic tank, such as bleach.

Blocked vents: Septic systems are designed with vents to release gases safely. If these vents are blocked, gases can accumulate and cause odours to escape into your home or yard. This is something we can pick up on with regular assessments.

What to Do If Your Septic Tank Smells

If you notice a foul odour coming from your septic tank or around your property, you can check for obvious problems first. These include blocked air vents, which may be covered with leaves or debris or, in bad weather, heavy snowfall. You can also look for obvious plumbing issues such as leaky pipes both inside and outside your home.

Consider using cleaning products such as Green Gobbler, many of which are safe for use on septic tanks. These contain biological additives like enzymes which help break down waste products in your tank.

However, if nothing is obviously wrong, it’s time to call in the professionals. Here at Septic Tank Services, we are able to quickly get to the bottom of things and see what the cause of the smell is.

Smell-B-gone

A smelly septic tank is often a sign of a more serious problem, so once you have checked your system as best you can yourself, give us a call for a more in-depth investigation. Wherever you are in Scotland or the north east of England, we’ll be able to come and take a look and help your smelly septic tank out. Get in touch with Septic Tank Services to book an appointment.

Problems with your septic tank?

Are you smelling funny odours form your septic tank, inside or outside your home? Or perhaps your land is getting marshy near it. Maybe even you are getting some backflow from the tank into your sink or toilet. All of these problems need checked out ASAP because they suggest underlying issues with the health of your septic tank.

Problems can include cracks in the tank or the pipes, or leaky seals or washers. It’s important we get a look straight away. We can get valuable insight into the health of your tank by using our specialist camera equipment to understand what the issues are. Then we can get to work with fixing the tank or, if there are serious problems, we can help you organise a replacement.

Installing septic tanks

Whether you need to replace an old tank or are looking to have one installed with a new build, we can help ensure everything goes smoothly. We always take great care of your property as much as possible when digging and filling in the holes for the tank and pipework.

If you are having one installed for the first time, we can help assess the suitability of the ground, both for the tank and the runoff. It’s important to have an area of ground where waste water can be released safely. This ground has to have a certain level of permeability, and we can test for this. Otherwise, if the ground is too hard, the water may flood the surface. If it is too soft, it may become marshy ground.

Wherever you live in Scotland or the north of England, our septic tank services are for you.

Got a blockage?

Owners of septic tanks know all too well what you can and can’t put down your drains. However, sometimes accidents happen and blockages occur, causing water to build up and re-enter your home through the sinks or toilets. This is a smelly and potentially expensive problem.

We can blast this away with our powerful jet wash, giving your waste pipes a new lease of life and stopping problems from entering your home. If you are noticing slow drainage, increasing smells or hear unusual noises form your pipes, give us a shout and we’ll investigate.

Plumbers for your septic tank

Managing household sewage effectively is crucial for maintaining a healthy and hygienic living environment. For homes that are not connected to the local waste system, cesspits and septic tanks are common solutions for wastewater management. Regular maintenance, including emptying these systems, is essential to prevent overflows, contamination, and environmental problems. Here are some of the ways Septic Tank Services can help with your sewage services and keep your system running healthily for many years.

Cesspits

Although illegal in Scotland, cesspits can be kept in England. Our services cover the north of England, so if you are looking for help with maintaining or removing your cesspit, give us a call. We can empty them on a regular basis. This is vital as cesspits have no other way to release their contents, unlike septic tanks. We can stop your cesspit from overflowing or backflowing into your property.

Septic Tanks

Properties which cannot connect to the main sewer system require another means to dispose of their water waste. That’s where septic tanks come in, and they are most common in homes in the countryside and away from towns and cities.

Regular emptying and maintenance of them is vital to ensure a long life and reduce the potential for leaks. Doing this avoids sewage backups into your home, which can be costly to fix. If not maintained properly, the bacteria in your septic tank will go out of balance and your tank may stop functioning correctly. This can lead to contamination and public health risks.

How we can help with you domestic sewage treatment

We have a range of services designed to make operating and maintaining your sewage treatment system a breeze. They include:

Inspection and Assessment

Our team of professionals will inspect your tank to assess its condition. If you haven’t had a check for some time, or if you have only recently moved into the property, then this is a vital step to making sure there are no problems brewing under the ground. They may check for signs of leaks, cracks, or other issues that need attention.

One of the key tools we can use to check tanks is our hi-tech camera, which gives us a clear view of every corner of your tank, and is minimally invasive.

Tank emptying

We use our specialist trucks and pumping equipment to clean out your tanks. Septic tanks hold onto solid waste, so regular emptying is vital to ensure they continue to work properly. We will dispose of this waste properly and legally, following all environmental regulations.

Manage your domestic waste with Septic Tank Services

Regular emptying and maintenance of cesspits and septic tanks is essential to ensure a healthy living environment for all. Such maintenance not only protects your home and health but also contributes to a cleaner, safer environment. Get in touch with Septic Tank Services today and we will be happy to discuss how we can help with your sewage services.

Maintaining a septic tank or cesspit can be a straightforward task if you use experts. Here at Septic Tank Services, we service customers throughout Scotland and the north of England to ensure their tanks all function properly and any problems are fixed quickly. By making sure everything is in good condition, you can rest assured that your property and environment will be safe. Our experienced professionals offer efficient cesspit services and septic tank maintenance throughout the year.

Regular scheduled cesspit and septic tank maintenance

It’s important to keep an eye on your wastewater systems. Just like other areas of our domestic lives like our hot water boilers and our cars, regular maintenance is key to ensuring they keep working properly year after year.

We can regularly check up on your cesspits or septic tanks to make sure they are working correctly. For example, by checking for the early signs of blockages we can avoid waste from backing-up into your home, creating a costly (and smelly) emergency.

Routine inspections and pumping are essential to prevent backups, clogs, and system failures. Regular maintenance can also extend the lifespan of your system, saving you from costly repairs or replacements. It also helps ensure your local environment stays clean and healthy too.

If you are in the north of England with a cesspit, it’s vital to make sure there are no cracks which can lead to seepage into the ground. A cesspit offers no way for waste water to exit as it isn’t treated in any way, so any escape would be a serious problem.

Keeping your cesspit and septic tank in top condition

Maintaining your wastewater system is straightforward and shouldn’t get in the way of your daily life. By using Septic Tank Services, we can help you do this by regularly emptying your tanks. This ensures there won’t be any overflow accidents. You can get in touch with us to arrange a one-off empty, or schedule in regular visits throughout the year, in any weather.

We’re also able to make sure your tanks are in good working condition by performing regular assessments. We use our specialist camera to see inside and detect any problems before they become an expensive issue. We can combine our services into one visit to reduce interruptions to your property.

Septic Tank Services can also make sure your drainage field for septic tanks is still fit for purpose. Changing groundwater heights and earth shifts can sometimes make previously good water runoff ground less efficient. This can cause problems with flooding near your property.

Regular visits prevent large problems

A problem with a cesspit or septic tank system can quickly become expensive if not dealt with quickly. However, by regularly checking their health, we can stop problems from arising. Should an emergency situation rear its head, do give us a call and we will help. So for all your septic tank and cesspit services throughout Scotland and the north of England, talk to us and see how we can make sure you are going with the flow!

Septic tank emptying and septic tank maintenance

Did you know that a well maintained septic tank could last 30 or even 40 years? All the tanks we install are concrete because we believe they give the best value to our customers over time. They can better withstand the stresses of ground movement and rising water levels compared to their plastic counterparts. However, you can’t simply leave them in the ground and forget about them. They have to be emptied regularly, and also checked for any problems that may arise.

We offer regular domestic septic tank emptying services in Scotland and the north of England to ensure they continue to work efficiently. If you don’t empty regularly, the tank may overflow, or you may find dirty water backing up into your sinks and toilets. In addition, you might have problems with your pipes leaking.

Get in touch today and book your next septic tank empty with us.

Regular septic tank assessments

It’s a good idea to book in regular assessments of your septic tanks. These are minimally invasive and use a specialist camera system to allow us to see every square inch of the inside of your tank.

This lets us see if there are any problems developing in your tank. It’s especially important in older tanks who may be nearing the end of their lives, or tanks which have not been maintained properly for some time. We can make sure everything is in good working order. If there are problems, we can advise on the best way to fix them.

Should there be a blockage, we can use our high pressure water jets to blast your drains clean. This is an easy way to ‘reset’ your pipes, especially if they have been suffering from neglect. We can also make sure they are still up to the job without having any holes or cracks.

Let the experts check your tank

Our team of professionals have installed, assessed and maintained thousands of tanks over the years, and they have a good eye for detail. So if you want peace of mind that your tank is in good condition and is emptied regularly and thoroughly, then give Septic Tank Services a call. Our domestic septic tank emptying services are available all across Scotland the north of England. Whether you are at the bottom of an old lane or perched on the side of a cliff, our fleet of vehicles will come and service your wastewater appliances. Just get in touch today and we can help book in a time to help you when it’s convenient.

Like anything in life, the more something is maintained, the longer it should last. The same goes for septic tanks and cesspits, both of which require regular maintenance, cleaning and upkeep. If you don’t, you might end up with bad smells, dirty water backup and expensive repairs. Septic tank upkeep is important to ensure you get the most out of your system, and it lasts as long as possible.

What’s the difference between septic tanks and cesspits?

Whilst both perform a similar function, septic tanks and cesspits require different methods of upkeep. But what’s the difference? Although they are both underground containers used to collect wastewater from residential or commercial properties that are not connected to a public sewer system, they work in different ways.

Septic Tank: A septic tank is a watertight chamber, and the ones we install are all made of concrete. We believe these last longer for our clients. A septic tank receives wastewater from sinks, toilets, showers, and laundry facilities. Inside the tank, solids settle to the bottom, forming sludge, while liquids flow out into a drainage field elsewhere, and over time returns into the groundwater.

Cesspit: A cesspit is a simple underground tank that collects and stores sewage without any treatment. It requires regular emptying by vacuum tanker trucks to prevent overflow and environmental contamination. It’s important to note that cesspits are illegal in Scotland due to environmental concerns, but can still be used by our customers in the north of England.

The Importance of maintaining your wastewater system

By keeping a regular maintenance schedule, you can help ensure that your septic tank or cesspit are in good shape. That’s because routine inspections help prevent issues like clogs, backups, and system failures from developing. We do this for you by utilising a specialist camera which can see right inside your tank and identify any potential issues. Regular maintenance also extends the lifespan of your septic tank or cesspit, saving you money on costly repairs or replacements down the line. A well maintained septic tank could last decades if cared for properly.

Properly maintained septic tanks and cesspits reduce the risk of groundwater contamination and pollution of nearby water sources. This is crucial for protecting the environment and public health, as well as you own health. A broken septic tank may need replaced, which can be costly.
