As one of the main septic tank installation companies in Scotland and the north of England, we’ve seen our fair share of problems when it comes to waste solutions. We assist clients when a fault in their system affects their properties. The fault often traces back to poor installation decisions made when the tank was first installed. This can lead to very expensive repairs – and even a complete removal and reinstallation of a new septic tank.

Here are some of the problems we have come across (and also why you should hire us to install your septic tank in the first place!)

Unsuitable sites

So often we’ll come across a tank which is simply in the wrong location. It might be that it is too shallow or too deep. It might be installed in an area which is close to many trees, resulting in problems with root growth penetrating the pipework. Some ground is liable to flood, and in such cases the water can actually move the tank. Even slight movement can cause pipes to come loose and the tank to become unstable.

Finding the right location for your septic tank is crucial. Often, the easiest place to locate it may not be the best long-term, and we can advise on that.

Wrong tank size

It’s important to think of the future when installing your septic tank. Although at the moment you may just be a couple moving into a home, you may soon start a family. Who knows how big that will get! So make sure you future-proof your septic tank and get the right size installed at the start. This way, you don’t have to dig it up and put in a bigger one later.

If your tank is too small, then not only will you have to empty it more often, it runs the risk of overflowing which can cause very smelly problems.

Poorly planned drainage field

The drainage field is where your waste water is released back into the environment so it can percolate down back to the water system,. To do so, the ground must be able to allow water to run through it. Not too fast, and not too slow! Get this part wrong, and you might end up with a muddy, smelly bog in your back garden. There might even be some flooding with water you really don’t want to be standing in barefoot.

We can help you decide on where to put your drainage field, and perform percolation tests to make sure it’s suitable. Speak to us at your planning stage to really feel the benefit of our years of experience.

Get in the professionals

Whilst it may be tempting tog to think you could dig a hole and install a septic tank yourself, it’s probably going to be easier in the long run to get us to do it. We’re efficient, professional and have seen enough mistakes made by others to know what to avoid. We’ve also got all the correct gear, tools and machinery. Of course, we’ll happily come to fix any problems that may occur if you do try to put a septic tank in yourself. But we’d rather do it right for you first time. Septic Tank Services cover all of Scotland and the north of England, and septic tank installation companies like us are trustworthy and customer focussed. Get in touch today to discuss your installation needs.

Those of us who live in rural parts of Scotland and the north of England know that a well-functioning septic tank is the sort of thing we rely on every day and only know how important it is when it needs attention. Getting every aspect of installing your septic tank right is vital in ensuring a long and trouble-free lifespan for it. That’s why working with experienced local septic tank installers like Septic Tank Services is so important. Here’s why you should choose us to install your septic tank.

Septic Tank Installers in Scotland and the north of England

As professional septic tank installers, we know all the legislation surrounding planning for and putting in a septic tank. We have also done enough installs to be able to advise you on the best place on your property to put it, as well as where the best location for your drainage field should be. If you get all of this correct at this stage, then it should minimise problems 10 or 20 years down the line.

The UK’s terrain is varied, and we’ve installed tanks all over the country. So whether you have thick, clay soil, sandy soil or are perched on a cliff, we can help guide you on the best solution. Sometimes, the easiest option is not always the best for long-term success and that’s what we will advise you on.

What sets us apart from others?

We’re headquartered in Lochgilphead but service all clients throughout Scotland and the north of England. We have worked all over the country and our reputation speaks for itself (alongside some very complimentary comments from happy customers!). Wherever you are, we will come and chat to you about your needs and install your septic tank. This makes us more than just your local septic tank installers, we’ll be your partners throughout the installation. We understand that it is a costly endeavour, so we’ll make sure every aspect of it runs smoothly with you.

From initial contact right the way through to saying goodbye after the installation, we’ll make sure you know what’s going on. We’re customer focussed, and if you have any questions about what we’re doing, just ask!

We only use the best materials, which further ensures a good lifespan for your septic tank. As a result, we only install concrete septic tanks as these are sturdier than plastic ones. They hold their shape better once the weight of soil is upon them. They are also better for the environment as plastic tanks gradually leach microplastics into the surrounding ground. So if you are looking for a quality install, give us a call. Contact Septic Tank Services today

Trustworthy septic tank installations

Wherever you are in Scotland or the north of England, we’ll come to you to install your septic tank. Our combined years of experience alongside a drive for customer satisfaction means your project will be in great hands. Just sit back and we’ll take care of it.

One of the most important jobs if you own a septic tank is to empty it of solids regularly. Otherwise known as septic tank pumping, it’s a vital job which stops your tank from overflowing and ultimately breaking.

The post Septic tank pumping appeared first on Septic Tank Services Ltd.

One of the most important responsibilities of owning a septic tank system is arranging regular septic tank pumping. Also known as septic tank emptying, this essential maintenance prevents your tank from overflowing, failing or causing costly damage to your property.

By removing accumulated solid waste, septic tank pumping keeps your system working efficiently and can help your septic tank last for decades.

What is septic tank pumping?

Septic tank pumping and septic tank emptying refer to the same process: removing solid waste from your septic tank.

Septic tanks separate solid waste and liquid wastewater and treat them differently. Liquid effluent flows out of the tank and into a drainage or leach field, where it is naturally filtered by the soil. Solid waste, however, settles at the bottom of the tank and remains there.

Because a septic tank has limited capacity, this solid waste must be professionally removed at regular intervals. If septic tank pumping is neglected, solids build up and begin to cause serious problems, including:

Blocked drains and slow drainage

Wastewater backing up into sinks and toilets

Strong sewage odours

Overflowing tanks and waste spilling onto your property

Fortunately, all of these issues are completely preventable with routine septic tank emptying.

Why should I invest in septic tank pumping?

Regular septic tank pumping services are essential for both performance and longevity.

First and foremost, pumping prevents solid waste from clogging your system and causing backups and blockages. Once wastewater begins backing up, you can quickly end up with overflowing toilets, foul-smelling drains and even flooded floors inside your home. Such an event also comes with serious health risks, including typhoid.

In some cases, excess pressure in the system can force wastewater out through drainage pipes outdoors. This creates smelly, contaminated areas on your property and posing environmental risks. This can also have a negative effect on your neighbours.

Just as importantly, routine septic tank emptying significantly extends the lifespan of your septic tank. A tank under constant strain due to lack of maintenance will fail far sooner than one that is emptied regularly. The cost difference between septic tank pumping and full tank replacement is substantial.

Keeping your tank clean also protects the beneficial bacteria that naturally break down waste. Excess solids can disrupt the chemical balance inside the tank, killing these bacteria and preventing proper wastewater treatment, often resulting in persistent odours and system inefficiency.

How often should you have a septic tank emptied?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often septic tank pumping is required. It depends on several factors, including the size of your septic tank, the number of people using the system, how frequently the property is occupied and whether it is a main residence or a holiday home.

For example, a septic tank serving a large family home will need emptying more often than one at a second or seasonal property, or where only one person regularly lives.

If you’re unsure when your tank was last pumped, or how often it should be emptied, give us a call. We can assess your system, provide expert advice and recommend a suitable septic tank emptying schedule.

Septic tank pumping in Scotland and Northern England

Professional septic tank pumping in Scotland and the north of England is a vital part of keeping your wastewater system safe, efficient and long-lasting. Regular emptying prevents overflows, eliminates odours and protects your property from flooding and contamination. Whether you need routine maintenance or an urgent septic tank emptying service, our experienced team is here to help.

Even the best septic tanks can break. This can be through no fault of the owner. Wear and tear can take its toll, as well as unexpected problems like ground movement or tree roots breaking pipes. It’s not always immediately obvious that there is a problem, but telling signs start to appear and it’s worth knowing what they are so you can look out for them. If you think you need some septic tank repair, and are in Scotland or the north of England, then we can help. Just get in touch and we can chat through your needs before sending our team out to help. In the meantime, here are some points to consider.

Do you need a septic tank repair?

Some of the more common symptoms which indicate a problem with your septic tank include:

Your toilets and drains are slow

Have you noticed that water is draining away more slowly than usual from your sinks or toilets? This indicates that there might be a blockage in a pipe somewhere, or even that your septic tank is full. If your drains are also gurgling, this is a sign that air is trapped somewhere and not letting your wastewater flow away freely. It could indicate a hole in a pipe. The sooner this is checked out, the better.

Strong smells

If you are noticing troubling odours around your drains or septic tank, that is a sign that something is wrong. It could be blocked, full or even leaking into the ground.

Water is pooling or not draining well outside

If you find your soakaway area is starting to become marshy, then water is not draining from it. This may be because the ground has shifted, your pipes have become blocked or the soil is too compacted.

It may come as a surprise to you that particularly lush vegetation in isolated areas of your property may indicate a problem! This may be where waste is leaking from a pipe, and the water, whilst helpful to the plant life, may also be carrying some nasty pollutants which should not be released into the environment. This needs to be checked out urgently.

Take care of your tank

The tanks we install can last up to 30 or even 40 years. However it is important to take care of them. This means regular maintenance, and keeping an eye out for little problems before they become big problems.

Remember to follow the basic rules, which is don’t put anything down your drains that isn’t designed for septic tanks, and definitely no harsh chemicals like bleach.

However if you are starting to have concerns, then it’s time to call us. We can investigate the health of your plumbing and tank. And if it’s a blockage we can obliterate it with our high-powered water jet.

If you are looking for trustworthy professionals who can assess your tank and fix it whenever possible, then give us a call today. Our septic tank repair services are available throughout Scotland an the north of England.

If you are planning a septic system installation in Scotland or the north of England, then there are a few things you need to consider first. Such a job requires skills, hard work and knowledge about local legislation. That means it is something which should only be taken on by professionals. And that’s where Septic Tank Services comes in. Our group of professionals can help guide you on every aspect of the planning, digging and aftercare of your new septic tank. Here’s some things to consider before giving us a call.

Do you need a septic tank?

If your property is in a rural location far from towns and cities, or an area without access to mains drainage, you will need to find.a way to safely dispose of your household sewage. That’s where septic tanks come in. They separate the liquid waste from the solid. Such tanks ensure that waste water is treated sufficiently so it can be released back into the environment without causing pollution. Once you have confirmed that you need a septic tank, then the next stage is checking local regulations.

Septic system installation regulations

Before a single spade is thrust into your soil, you should make sure you have all the permissions needed from the local council, SEPA (if in Scotland) or the Environmental Agency if in England. Not all sites are suitable for or capable of supporting a septic tank. It’s important that you are permitted to install a septic tank at the location you want it. You also need to make sure there is enough space for your tank as well as the soakaway field. We can help guide you on this before getting the authorities involved – just give us a call. We can give you all the information you need to ensure your application runs smoothly.

Getting the work started

Once all permissions have been given, it’s time to start the installation! This is where we come in. Our trained staff can get our equipment like diggers along pretty much any narrow road to your property. We will dig holes and trenches causing as little disruption as we can. Everything will be done to an agreed timescale. Exactly what this timescale is depends on location, size of tank and how much plumbing is required. This includes how far away your drainage field is.

We’ll set to work digging drainage trenches, make sure you’ll have room for future access so it can be maintained (speak to us about regular maintenance). We’ll install a septic system to the correct depth, making sure it is stable. Finally, we’ll build your drainage field and make sure everything is up and running before leaving.

When everything in installed, we’ll backfill and can offer landscaping services to help get everything back looking great in no time!

Drain unblocking with a jet power washer

Drain blockages are an inevitable part of having drains. Try as we might, things are going to find their way into our pipes which will cause blockages. From sanitary products to fat and food waste, it all builds up over time. So if you have issues with your drains, give us a call and we will solve your problem with our jet power washer. Wherever you are in Scotland or the north of England, we can help with your drain unblocking quickly and efficiently.

How to know if your drain is blocked

A blocked drain will start to smell quickly. Nothing can be flushed away, meaning all your household waste will sit near your home and start to smell. Not only that, the water will gradually build up backwards from the blockage. This will eventually spill out into your toilet, kitchen sink and anywhere else water is flushed away.

So the key here is to act fast. Give us a call straight away and we will help – the sooner the blockage is dealt with, the better.

Why do we use a jet power washer to unblock drains?

Our high-pressure water jet easily blasts through any blockage in your drain. It obliterates it, which is what we are after! Water is pumped through a high-pressure hose and nothing can stand in its way – that’s why we use one.

They are an environmentally friendly way to do this – no nasty chemicals are involved. By taking corrosive or polluting chemicals out of the equation, we can ensure the environment is not tainted by solving our customers’ drain problems.

Our jet washers power through anything, and this can often include roots which have slowly broken their way through pipes, or the accumulation of leaves which can be a big cause of drain blockages in the autumn and winter.

Finally, jet washers not only clear the blockage, they also clean the rest of the drain too. Any residue or smaller buildup is taken care of, leaving your pipes ready to do their work for years to come.

Long-reaching power

The other problem with drain blockages is that they are almost always in an inconvenient place! Rarely are they found right next to an access point. Fortunately, our power washer is small and thin enough to wind its way along the pipe until it comes to the issue. And when it gets there, it can use its full force to clean the pipe, no matter the distance.

So whether you drain blockage is around the house or up the drive, we can reach it and get everything working again.

Call us to unblock your drain

Drain unblocking is easy with Septic Tank Services. We will jet power the problem and before you know it, the blockage will be a distant memory. So wherever you are in Scotland or the north of England, gives us a call on 01546607046 or 07917358285 and speak to us now. Click here to read more about our jet washer service.

Of all the services we offer, including septic tank installation and maintenance throughout Scotland and the north of England, one which regularly comes in useful to our customers is high pressure jet septic tank cleaning. That’s because it is an efficient way to clean blocked pipes without needing to dig up any plumbing. If you are looking for someone to help with your drainage, give us a shout.

What is high-pressure jet cleaning?

Using no more than water, our jet technology blasts out at pressures as high as 3,000 – 4,000 PSI and speeds we have been told are faster than sound (although we’ve never tested that aspect!). Regardless, the intensity of the water jet breaks down everything in its path, from built-up fatty deposits to other gunk and blockages like ‘flushable’ wipes. As a side note – please don’t put so-called flushable wipes down your toilet, especially if you have a septic tank. You’re just asking for trouble!

The water also gives your pipes a good clean. If you have noticed a slow down of water draining, it may be because your pipes are being constricted by a buildup of waste around them. This will slowly grow until it blocks them completely, but it’s best to have them cleaned before then.

Why use high pressure jets?

As mentioned, high-pressure jet septic tank cleaning is non-invasive. This means we don’t need to dig up your pipes in order to clean them thoroughly. The long jet can travel along them until it reaches the blockage, and then deal with it instantly. The whole pipe gets a clean to ensure the job is done.

It’s also environmentally friendly because it uses only water. There’s no chemicals being used to break down any sludge, which would not only bad for the Earth, but probably terrible for the good bacteria in your septic tank. This water then travels into your tank and is discharged as usual into your leach field.

Although you can hire high-pressure jets and use them yourself, we would recommend that you don’t. This is due to a couple of reasons. Firstly, not all pipes can handle high pressure and this is especially the case with older wastewater systems. A jet could actually cause some damage which is to be avoided at all costs. We will assess your system before undertaking any jet cleaning. Secondly, high-pressure jets can be dangerous. They need to be handled with extreme caution – as much as using a chainsaw. Our team are all professionals and trained in their use, so they can carry the tasks out quickly and safely.

Get in touch today to have your pipes jet cleaned

Our high-pressure jet septic tank cleaning services are available year-round, throughout Scotland and the north of England. If you are having issues with your drainage like blockages or pooling, then give us a shout. We can come and check the problem and deal with it for you, so you can get back to life as normal.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget about the humble drainage field. It just sits there, day in day out, doing its little drainage job, bothering nobody. But then, one day, you notice that something isn’t quite right. Maybe it’s a bit boggy, or a bit smelly. Maybe there are strange noises as if beings from the underworld are trying to escape through your back garden. Well if any of this sounds familiar, then it’s probably time to call in the experts. We can come and get your field back to full health anywhere in Scotland or the north of England. But if you want to know more about when drainage fields for septic tanks need replacing, then read on.

Signs your drainage field is having problems

Also known as leach fields, these areas are a vital component of your wastewater system. It is where your waste water is let back out on to the ground to continue its filtration back down before rejoining the water cycle. But if it’s not working correctly, you need to fix it quickly before it starts casing problems like polluting the environment or causing issues in your home.

One of the first you might notice is a gurgling noise form your pipes. This can be an indication that water is not flowing freely through your pipes, perhaps because your drainage field is blocked. This can happen if there has been soil compaction, perhaps from cars on it. Whatever the cause, always keep an ear on your drains.

You might also smell some bad smells. Now, bad smells can indicate a number of problems when it comes to septic tanks, but if you are getting a nasty whiff near your drainage field then that’s the best place to start looking for issues.

Also, when you are visiting your field, keep an eye out for any vegetation looking unusually healthy. As we’ve mentioned before, sometimes this can be the result of an overfilled septic tank, but it can also be a problem with your drainage pipes. This can be due to too many nutrients leaking through and not draining properly.

Watch out for water

Just because you have a septic tank shouldn’t make you any more likely to suffer form flooding if you keep an eye on things. If your field is unusually wet and boggy, then the water isn’t able to drain away efficiently anymore. This might be reflected in your home with slow-draining water from your sink. If this happens, go check out your field.

A drainage field might start to see problems if there are too many roots growing around it. Maybe when it was installed it was out on its own with nothing near it, but over time trees and bushes may have crept in. Too many roots can cause pipes to be moved or broken, creating chaos for the system. Try to keep the area clear of all large plants to avoid this from happening.

Call us for help

If you realise something has gone wrong with your field, give us a call. Drainage fields for septic tanks only last around 20-30 years before it needs replacing so it’s worth having a health check if yours is getting a bit long in the tooth. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to help and offer advice throughout Scotland and the north of England.

To tell if your septic tank needs emptying, look out for these 5 symptoms:

Slow draining water in your home

Nasty smells in or outside your home

Water is starting to pool on the ground by your septic tank

Sewage is backing up into your sink or toilet

Suspiciously lush grass or vegetation is growing around your septic tank

How often you need septic tank emptying depends on two main factors: how many people use the system and the size of the septic tank itself.

So, do septic tanks need emptying? Absolutely – and Septic Tank Services does this for customers across Scotland and the north of England. Regular septic tank emptying is essential for keeping your system safe, efficient and long-lasting. We recommend setting up a regular septic tank emptying schedule, and once we inspect your system, we can advise how often pumping is required. Contact us today to arrange a septic tank empty and discuss ongoing maintenance.

If you’re still unsure whether your tank needs attention, let’s go into some more details about the warning signs below.

Five signs your septic tank needs emptying

1. Your water is draining slowly at home

If water is draining slowly from sinks, baths or showers, it can indicate that your septic tank is full or clogged. Unfortunately, this problem won’t resolve itself. Without intervention, a full septic tank can overflow, leading to blocked drains, wastewater backups and flooding around your property.

2. There are nasty smells nearby

Bad smells coming from drains or around your property are a common sign of septic tank problems. This may indicate that your tank needs emptying or that the beneficial bacteria inside the tank are no longer functioning properly. Pay close attention to odours near where your septic tank is located. Persistent sewage smells should never be ignored.

3. Water starting to pool

If you notice standing water or pooling near your septic tank or drainage area, this is a strong sign that the tank is full and needs urgent attention. A full tank can force wastewater out into the surrounding ground. During emptying, we can also inspect the tank for damage, such as cracks or structural issues, to prevent further problems.

4. Your sewage is backing up

Wastewater backing up into sinks, toilets or showers is a clear sign that your septic tank has reached capacity. There is simply nowhere left for waste to go. This is an urgent issue. Contact us immediately and we’ll arrange emergency septic tank emptying to restore your system and prevent property damage.

5. Lush Grass or Vegetation

While a green garden is normally a good thing, suspiciously lush grass or vegetation near your septic tank can indicate trouble. This often means the tank is too full and leaking excess nutrients into the surrounding soil. If you notice this, get in touch and we’ll investigate and empty the tank if required.

Once a septic tank has been installed underground, usually the only visible evidence on the surface that one exists is due to the septic tank inspection chamber. This looks like a manhole, and underneath this is the crucial piece of kit which allows us access to check on the health of your tank. It’s what we use when assessing your tank and deciding if any action needs to be taken to improve its effectiveness. It can show us if there is a blockage, or if the waste water is flowing freely. But what happens if your inspection chamber is damaged?

Broken inspection chambers

It’s rare that an inspection chamber will break, as they are built from sturdy materials. However, accidents happen and if you suspect something has broken, it’s best to call us straight away. A broken chamber can lead to blockages, leaks, and even system failure if not handled correctly and promptly.

The first person to call is Septic Tank Services. We help customers all over Scotland and the north of England and can bring our expertise wherever it’s needed. We will quickly assess the damage and provide appropriate solutions. If we can repair the damage, that’s what we’ll do.

However, if the damage is more serious – perhaps through some unexpected land movement – then it may require a bigger job. Fortunately we have all the digging equipment needed to excavate and replace any problem inspection chamber. We will give you a quote for the job before continuing with any work.

Owning a septic tank means you have to change your way of thinking about even the most common of household tasks. We’ve previously talked about the best sort of toilet roll you can use, but in this blog we’re talking about washing your clothes. Have you ever wondered what is the best laundry detergent for septic tanks? Septic tanks rely on a delicate balance of bacteria to break down waste, and using the wrong type of detergent can severely disrupt this balance. This can lead to costly repairs and even flooding of your grounds and property. If this happens, you can rely on Septic Tank Services to sort everything out in properties within Scotland and the north of England.

Scroll on for some suggestions you can buy today, and remember to keep on top of your septic tank by booking an assessment by us.

But first, here’s a few tips on what to look out for when selecting laundry detergent for your home with a septic tank to avoid unnecessary problems.

What to avoid

Firstly, here’s what to avoid when it comes to septic tank-friendly detergents. If you are using detergents with heavy fragrances to help your clothes smell ‘clean’, then those chemicals are probably hurting the good bacteria in your septic tank. Similarly, avoid antibacterial laundry cleansers. These are meant to clean your machine but with a septic tank, they are going to do a whole lot of damage to your little bacteria friends, especially if you use them regularly.

You should also avoid detergents with dyes in them. These are added to some types of detergents and pods in order to make whites ‘whiter than white’. They don’t actually make your clothes any cleaner – they just give the impression of it, whilst potentially disrupting the balance in your septic tank. Avoid!

Laundry detergents to use

So what should you be looking for in a detergent that won’t cause your septic tank to fail? Ideally, choose products marked as eco-friendly or septic-safe. These formulas actively clean your clothes without disrupting the beneficial bacteria in your tank’s ecosystem.”They are also better for the environment too.

A good laundry detergent for septic tanks should be free from chemicals like surfactants. Although these help break down oils in your dirty clothes, they can be harmful to your tank’s bacteria. It’s always a good idea to choose liquid detergents if possible, over powder. That’s because powder can sometimes clump together in your pipes or create a sludge. Liquid will avoid this issue altogether.

High-efficiency (HE) detergents are another good option to consider. They are designed to produce fewer suds and to use less water in a wash. This is great for your septic tank as it means less going into it, whilst you still get the same result of clean clothes. Excessive suds from regular detergents can also overflow into your drain field, causing issues with water absorption and soil clogging.

Septic tank-friendly laundry detergents

So here’s a list of laundry detergents you can consider using. We’re not sponsored by them, and do let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page:

Ecover Zero Laundry Liquid – With 0% fragrance and enzymes to minimise the risk of allergies on sensitive skin, this one is approved by the British Allergy Foundation.

Ecover Zero non-bio washing powder refill – This features biodegradable ingredients and is formulated with 0% fragrance and 0% enzyme. So it is perfect for septic tanks. The refillable package means less waste, too.

Sonett Sensitive Laundry Liquid – Non-scented, non-coloured washing-liquid made from pure vegetable surfactants. This liquid is free from petrochemical ingredients, fragrances, colourings, preservatives, enzymes, GMOs and complexing agents. This makes it a great choice for use if you have septic tanks.

Eco Egg – an alternative to detergents is an eco egg. This clever device is suitable for septic tanks because it doesn’t use any soap or harsh chemicals at all. Rather, it has refillable mineral pellets to clean your clothes. Great for the environment and those with sensitive skin.

Soap nuts – a natural alternative, these are the fruit of the Sapindus family of trees. They contain naturally occurring soaps and surfactants and have been used for washing for centuries.

Clean clothes, healthy tank!

So do make sure that you use the correct sort of detergent that won’t clog or harm your septic tank. However if you do have a problem and are looking for someone to investigate and fix it, then give us a shout. We cover all of Scotland and the north of England. Get in touch today.

With so many rules to follow about what you can and can't put down your toilet and drains, you might think that toilet paper is toilet paper and it doesn't really matter what sort you use. Whatever you bum prefers, right? Wrong!

The post What are the best (and worst) choices for septic tank toilet paper? appeared first on Septic Tank Services Ltd.

Choosing the right septic tank toilet paper is important for keeping your septic system working properly. Some toilet papers such as Cheeky Panda Bamboo toilet paper break down quickly and are safe for septic tanks. However thicker or chemically treated products can cause blockages and disrupt the beneficial bacteria that break down waste. For homeowners across Scotland and the North of England, using biodegradable, septic-safe, single-ply toilet paper helps prevent pipe blockages, slow drainage, and septic tank problems. Septic Tank Services Ltd provides septic tank inspections, maintenance, and emptying services to help households keep their septic systems running safely and efficiently.

With so many rules to follow about what you can and can’t put down your toilet and drains, you might think that toilet paper is toilet paper and it doesn’t really matter what sort you use. Whatever you bum prefers, right? Wrong! Choosing the right septic tank toilet paper is more important than you might think. Septic systems are designed to handle waste efficiently. However, the type of toilet paper you use can significantly impact how well your system functions.

Some toilet papers break down easily and are safe for septic tanks. Others can cause blockages or have chemicals harmful to a tank’s bacteria. As septic tank experts covering Scotland and the north of England, we’ve seen out fair share of toilet paper disasters. Here’s a rundown of the types of paper to go for and avoid.

And remember, if you are having problems with your septic tank, book it in for an assessment with us before the issues get even worse!

Best types of toilet paper for septic tanks

The best type of toilet paper for septic tanks is one that is biodegradable and dissolves quickly in water. Biodegradable toilet paper is specifically designed to break down rapidly once it enters the septic system, reducing the risk of clogs and build-up in your tank. Biodegradable toilet paper is often made from recycled materials, making it an environmentally friendly choice as well.

Another key factor is the ply of the toilet paper. Sure, we all love a nice thick double or triple ply. But this can cause problems with the way septic tanks work. Single-ply toilet paper tends to dissolve more easily than thicker, multi-ply options, making it a safer choice for septic systems. So unfortunately you will have to decide on whether to give your bottom an extra-special treat, or if you want to avoid septic tank issues down the line.

Some companies offer toilet paper specifically designed for septic tanks, for example Papernet and Novatissue.

Other options include Unbleached Bamboo Toilet Paper, which breaks down at a steady rate, and The Cheeky Panda Bamboo Toilet Tissue which is biodegradable, free from fragrances and suitable for vegans.

Worst types of toilet paper for septic tanks

The worst types of toilet paper for septic tanks are those that are thick and heavily quilted. These types of toilet paper don’t break down easily and can cause serious problems in a septic system. Any that contain added lotions or perfumes should be avoided at all costs. These types of rolls often contain chemicals that can disrupt the natural bacterial balance in your septic tank, which is essential for breaking down waste. When these products accumulate, they can lead to blockages, slow drainage, and even septic system failure. If you find you have a blockage, perhaps because you didn’t realise the importance of choosing the right paper, then we can help.

Paper over the cracks

So if you have a septic tank, it’s best to choose toilet paper that is single-ply, biodegradable, and free of added chemicals. Remembering these three rules can ensure a longer-lasting septic system and keep everything running smoothly. By selecting the right type of septic tank toilet paper, you can help ensure that your septic system remains healthy for many years.
